During World War One, the stalemate on the Western Front caused the development of new technology and weapons to try to break the endless fighting. The tank was first used on the battlefield during the Battle of the Somme, in 1916,  and were deployed to against Germany. These first tanks were soft moving and heavily armoured tracked vehicles to act as a breakthrough machine to punch a hole in enemy trenches and to protect the infantry marching behind them. The British led the way for developmental tank programs and only in the late stages of World War One did Germany produce their version of the tank known as the A7V. The balance between firepower, protection and mobility is essential for an effective tank design.

Lego® World War II Tanks

Before the outbreak of World War Two, most countries in Europe has embraced the components of tank warfare. Designs had progressed since 1918, many innovations in armour led to heavier tanks with better protection for their crews. Increased capacity and industrialisation meant that tanks could be mass produced and tank designs needed to be simplified to allow easier production. Also, the formations of tank corps became more formal. Many contained different types of tanks such as light, medium, cruiser and infantry tanks which all fulfilled a certain role on the battlefield.

Lego® Cold War Tanks

As the Cold War began, tank technology continued to develop. Tanks became more and more specialised for different roles and tasks. There were reconnaissance tanks, heavy tanks and most importantly Main Battle Tanks (MBTs). All these tanks were adapted to suit their roles and to work in coordination with other vehicles on the battlefield such as Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IVFs) and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs). Main guns grew in calibre and so did the size of tanks and also the weights of the chassis. Numerous designs were suited to nuclear situations and could protect their crew from radiation fallout.
